Once upon a time in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh, the last Guru of the Sikhs, invited all the Sikhs. All the people gathered at Anandpur Sahib Maidan after getting the permission of the Guru. That’s why Dayaram, a resident of Lahore, presented his head in the Guru’s shelter from the crowd. After this Guru Gobind Singh ji came out again and again to say;- “I want the head” As soon as the Guru said this, Dharmadas of Saharanpur took his step forward to offer his head in the shelter of the Guru. Dharmdas was also taken inside by the Guru and again a stream of blood was seen flowing from inside. Similarly, 3 more people Himmat Rai, Mohak Chand, Sahib Chand came forward to donate their heads to the Guru and again blood started flowing from inside. The people standing outside thought that all five had been sacrificed. But in the meanwhile Guru Gobind Singh brings all those 5 people out with him. Everyone gets surprised.

Guru Govind told everyone that an animal was sacrificed inside instead. I was taking the exam of these people and all of them have passed that exam. Thus Guru Govind Singh introduced these 5 people as his five pawns and made these five drink nectar and said that from today you will be called Singh. And instructed them to keep long hair, beard and also instructed them to wear Panch Kakar. After this incident, Guru Gobind Rai was called Guru Gobind Singh and the word Singh was added to the name of Sikhs. And in memory of this day, the festival of Baisakhi is celebrated by the Sikh community.

  • Gurudwaras are decorated everywhere on the occasion of Baisakhi or Vaisakhi festival.
  • People of Sikh religion listen to Guruvani. On this day kheer, sherbet are made and langars are served in the gurudwaras.
