The Wealth of Billionaires Increased By 121% During The Epidemic

Presenting the report, Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar said, “Marginalized Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, women and people working in the unorganized sector in the country continue to suffer because of a system that , which is tilted in favor of the richest people. Poor people are paying more tax than their income and they have to spend more on essential things and services as compared to the rich. Now the time has come to tax the rich in such a way that they pay their fair share of the total tax.”

Behar has urged the Union Finance Minister to implement progressive taxes such as wealth tax and inheritance tax, as these taxes have historically proved effective in reducing economic inequality. Oxfam has said that a nationwide survey has shown that more than 80 percent of the people of India are in favor of taxing the rich and the companies making record profits during the Kovid 19 epidemic. Rs 40,423 crore required for nutrition can be raised. According to the report, if a one-time tax of 5 per cent is imposed on the 10 richest billionaires of the country, Rs 1.37 lakh crore can be collected. This amount is more than one and a half times the total budget of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India for the financial year 2022-23.
