William Wordsworth Biography – William Wordsworth was a noted English poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic era in English literature with their joint publication of Lyrical Ballads (1798).

William Wordsworth Biography

William Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770 in Cumberland, England. His father John Wordsworth worked as a lawyer. Wordsworth’s father was the legal representative of James Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale. He was the second child among the five children of his parents. William’s sister Dorothy Wordsworth was a poet and diarist.

He had three other siblings: Richard, the eldest, who was a lawyer; John, born after Dorothy, who died in 1805; Christopher, the youngest, entered the church and became master of Trinity College, Cambridge.

His mother died when he was 7 years old and his father also died when he was 13 years old. Both of Wordsworth’s parents died before he was 15, leaving him and his four other siblings in the care of various relatives.

He then attended grammar school in Hawkshead, a village in the heart of the Lake District. At Hawkshead, Wordsworth received an excellent education in classics, literature and mathematics.

In 1787, William began his studies at St John’s College, Cambridge with the help of his uncles. He obtained his BA degree in 1791.

Wordsworth visited France in 1790 in the midst of the French Revolution. On his return trip to France the following year, he fell in love with Annette Vallon, who had become pregnant. Who gave birth to a daughter Caroline in 1792.

In 1793, he published his first book, “An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketch”.

In 1795, Wordsworth met Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The two became friends, and worked together on Lyrical Ballads (1798).

In 1802, Wordsworth married his childhood friend, Mary Hutchinson. They had five children; John Wordsworth, Dora Wordsworth, Thomas Wordsworth, Catherine Wordsworth and William “Willie” Wordsworth. Unfortunately, Wordsworth’s two young children had died in the same year: six-year-old Thomas and three-year-old Catherine.

On 23 April 1850, William Wordsworth died of pleurisy at his residence in Rydal Mount, Westmorland, England. He was buried at St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere.
